Environment

Our business directly affects the environment, which means we carry a greater responsibility to protect it. We do this by recognizing the economic value of sustainability, understanding the whole truth about climate change, and combining this wisdom to guide our path forward.
Environment
our goal We are conscious of resources and we ensure that they can be replenished for future generations.

The Aboitiz Group is conscious of resources and ensures they can be replenished for future generations. We are continuously minimizing the impact of our business to the environment by reducing emissions, proper materials and waste management, and increasing renewable energy capacities.

Increasing our Renewable Energy Portfolio by 2030
Our key strategy remains the same, which is to aggressively expand our Cleanergy portfolio, aiming for a 50:50 balance between our Cleanergy and Thermal assets.

Business Continuity Planning – Through the Cooperative Business Continuity Plan, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) conduct business continuity planning (BCP) to strengthen community enterprise and reduce their vulnerability to the impacts of unforeseen events, including major emergencies and disasters.

Local Climate Change Action Planning – We partnered with the Climate Change Commission in conducting trainings on Local Climate Change Action Planning to increase capacities of local municipalities. Communities are taught to be climate-resilient, identifying risks and vulnerabilities and developing long- term strategies to reduce risk and future losses on livelihood, human settlements, and resources.

A-Park Program Cumulative number of trees planted as part of APARK (million trees)
Under the Aboitiz Group’s nationwide reforestation initiative, the trees we plant are all under our overall carbon sequestration drive and action on climate change, specifically, SDG 13 (take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts) and SDG 17 (institutional partnerships to revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development). A-Park also serves as our contribution to the government’s national greening efforts in partnership with the DENR. As of December 2022, 12.44 million trees have been planted, with a total investment of PHP521 million for A-Park.

Resource Efficiency and Waste Management
Team member-driven programs such as the Aboitiz No Impact Challenge promotes lifestyle changes that reduce carbon emission and water consumption in daily routines. Environmental management and improvements in operational eco-efficiencies, on the other hand, are managed by our strategic business units through their respective environmental units.
Our Race to Reduce (R2R) programs have paved the way for addressing concerns related to biodiversity, resource efficiency, and waste management.
Energy & Water Consumption For the year 2020, our energy and water consuption are the following.
We continue to manifest sustainability as an idea that traverses multiple sectors of society in order to create a cleaner and more responsible future. Water consumption for the year 2020 was approximately 2.7 million cubic meters, while energy consumption was approximately 990 thousand mega-watt hours.

Ecosystem-Based Biodiversity Management

Led by its different strategic business units, the Aboitiz Group initiated programs to manage our impact on Life on Water (SDG 14) and Life on Land (SDG 15). Initial environmental impact assessments for business projects lead to the management of different flora and fauna species in different ecosystems adjacent to where our business units operate.

The Aboitiz Cleanergy Park is an eight-hectare ecological preserve located in Davao City.

The Aboitiz Cleanergy Park is home to the critically endangered Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), endemic and migratory birds, and marine species. It has been assigned by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as the Pawikan Rescue Center of Davao City.

The Pawikan Conservation in Calubcub, Batangas founded 42 nests, released 4,811 Pawikan hatchlings, and rescued 6 Pawikans.

AboitizLand Seafront, our real estate development along the coast of San Juan, Batangas, launched a multi-sectoral program approach in partnership with UP Institute of Environmental Sciences and Meteorology, for managing the protection of Pawikan species such as the Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and the Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata).

wetlands & rivers Balabag Wetland Park - Boracay The Balabag Wetland Park is a three-year project that will convert the one-hectare lagoon into a linear urban park.

The entire wetland area is being converted to an urban linear park with these enhancements:

  • Five aerators to improve the water quality – A 3D ‘Boracay’ letter signage as a design feature and point of interest
  • Community center in front of D’Mall to also serve as an activity area – Perimeter landscaping and pavers covering its entire surrounding.
  • Parking area for proper loading and unloading of visitors.
  • Among the key upcoming features are a plaza and a boardwalk lined with trees and plants endemic to Boracay to help rebuild the area’s biodiversity. These will be constructed by our partner government agency in 2021.
wetlands & rivers #WowSanJuanRiver In 2019, Aboitiz and the DENR signed on for #WOWSanJuanRiver or the San Juan River (Manila Bay) Rehabilitation Project.

The main objective is to restore the entire stretch of this 11-kilometer Pasig River tributary back to life. This involves pollution control through clean-up, rehabilitation, conservation, and preservation. Its success will rely on solid collaborative efforts from multi-sectoral stakeholders in its development and implementation.

  • Conducted the first and second rounds of consultation meetings with stakeholders.
  • Finalized the interventions for the SJR Rehab Project together with the DENR.
  • Conducted site validation together with the DENR West Field Office.
