In response to seasonal pollution challenges along the San Juan shores in Batangas, Aboitiz Land spearheaded the San Juan coastal clean-up in Batangas. This second leg of the collaboration between Aboitiz Land, Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (AFI), and Communities Organized for Resource Allocation (CORA) Nonprofit aimed to organize a significant coastal cleanup initiative named ‘Coastal Cleanup Amihan.’

The coastal areas of San Juan, vital for economic sustenance and leisure activities, face persistent threats from seasonal marine pollution, primarily caused by escalating plastic waste. The increasing volume of non-biodegradable debris, notably plastic packaging and bottles, poses a significant threat to the local ecosystem and community well-being.

Named after the ‘Amihan’ winds characterizing the strong monsoon season from late October to early April, the Coastal Cleanup Amihan initiative brought together various stakeholders, including locals, government agencies, and private sectors, to raise awareness about the detrimental impact of plastic waste on marine life and coastal areas.

Engaging volunteers from Seafront Residents, Aboitiz Land employees, Municipal Environmental and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) San Juan Batangas, MENRO Sariaya Quezon, Philippine Coast Guard, Barangay Calubcub Officials, and PNP San Juan, the initiative aimed to mitigate the plastic pollution problem.

David Rafael, CEO of Aboitiz Land, stressed the urgency of addressing non-biodegradable debris, particularly plastics, to safeguard oceans’ health and coastal communities. He emphasized the joint efforts of the local community and private sectors in preserving the coastlines for future generations.

During the cleanup drive, volunteers diligently collected nearly 750 kg of marine debris. This includes both driftwood and plastic waste, including bottles, wrappers, caps, sachets, and styrofoam, highlighting the severity of the issue. This emphasized the pressing need for responsible consumption and collective action to mitigate environmental degradation.

Maribeth Marasigan, President and COO of Aboitiz Foundation commended the collective efforts and emphasized the importance of these initiatives in shaping a sustainable legacy for cleaner oceans and shores.

Although the Coastal Cleanup Amihan marked a successful endeavor, ongoing commitment and concerted actions are crucial to mitigate the seasonal influx of ocean waste. Aboitiz Land remains steadfast in its commitment to lead preservation and restoration efforts, ensuring the San Juan shores are kept clean for the local community.
