The Carbon PH Coalition, uniting top private companies committed to sustainable practices and Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in the Philippines, re-convened last February 12 for its learning series-session. Hosted by the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Sustainable Interventions for Biodiversity, Oceans, and Landscapes (SIBOL) Project, the session deepened collaboration for a Low Carbon Economy.

Mon Isberto, SIBOL’s Private Sector Engagement Advisor, stressed the importance of local policies in driving the country towards sustainability. While Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar, Aboitiz Group’s Chief Reputation and Sustainability Officer and Aboitiz Foundation President, highlighted the coalition’s mission to foster knowledge sharing and investment exploration within the carbon market. She further emphasized the coalition’s dedication to sharing knowledge on NBS investments and advocating for policies conducive to environmental conservation.

“The coalition’s role as a catalyst for collaboration and policy advocacy aims to drive meaningful change in sustainability practices. Their efforts are geared towards fostering partnerships, influencing policies, and ultimately driving meaningful transformations towards a more sustainable future,” Hontiveros-Malvar said.

The highlight of the session was the presentation of Dr. Neil Aldrin Mallari from the Center for Conservation Innovations Philippines (CCI PH). Dr. Mallari discussed the potential of SIBOL’s Post-Odette Green Recovery Program in Palawan, eliciting enthusiasm among participants as it presents a good example of the transformative impact of carbon credit generation. He also stressed important lessons in forest building and rewilding efforts, noting that they require time and science-based approaches to do them the right way.

Meanwhile Tito Ilagan, SIBOL’s esteemed Partnership Development Specialist, has unveiled plans for the imminent launch of investment packages aimed at supporting the restoration of damaged eco-sites in Palawan. Scheduled on February 15, 2024 in Puerto Princesa City, this event marks a significant step in the Coalition’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community resilience.

These initiatives underscore the Carbon PH Coalition’s dedication to driving positive change and fostering a greener, more sustainable future. Companies eager to contribute to this noble cause and collaborate with the Coalition are encouraged to register and become part of the movement.

Aboitiz Cleanergy Park is off to a great start with a new sea turtle nest and hatchlings release

AboitizEyes
January 12, 2024

As we enter the new year, sea turtle eggs started to hatch from a nest at Aboitiz Cleanergy Park in Sitio Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya Davao City. One by one the hatchlings emerged from the sand ready to take on their journey to the sea.

These sea turtles or pawikan hatchlings came from the eighth nest found at the Park back on October 30, 2023. Initially found in an area where the eggs can be reached by sea water – a condition that can be detrimental to the eggs – they were transferred the next day to the hatchery to protect them from getting wet.

Survival of the fittest
Survival of the fittest. Only around 1 in 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood as they face numerous dangers including marine plastic pollution. The ceremonial releasing of hatchlings at Aboitiz Cleanergy Park last January 3, 2024, aims to raise awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and preservation especially in areas such as the Park which is a nesting ground for the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle.

Out of the 171 transferred eggs, 159 eggs hatched after over 60 days of incubation. The hatchlings were released on January 3 and 4, 2024 by Davao Light and Power Co. Inc. (Davao Light), with various individuals, groups, and organizations namely, PEACE 911 of the Davao City Mayor’s Office, Vice Mayor’s Office, House of Hope Foundation for Kids with Cancer, Inc., Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) XI – Davao City Jail-Annex, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Station Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), Department of Education Region XI, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Davao, and members of the Davao media.

To date, there are six more nests at the Park with eggs that are expected to hatch between January to March. The latest clutch of eggs was laid on the morning of January 10, 2024.

Since the Park’s launch in 2014, 8,461 pawikan hatchlings from 79 nests have already been released. The ceremonial releasing of hatchlings aims to raise awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and preservation especially in areas such as the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park, a nesting ground for the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, only around 1 in 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood. As they grow into maturity, they face many dangers such as dehydration, predators including birds and crabs, and marine plastic pollution. Thus, conservation efforts such as mangrove tree planting, coastal clean up, and proper waste management are important.

The eight-hectare ecological preserve and biodiversity conservation site is managed by Davao Light and Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. It serves as Davao City’s Pawikan Rescue Center facility, a collaborative effort with the Davao City LGU and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region XI. It has a mangrove forest and is home to 106 species of endemic and migratory birds, and other marine life.

CitySavings Supports Indigenous Learners with Educational Aid

CitySavings Extends Educational Assistance to Indigenous Peoples (IP) Learners

AboitizEyes
January 8, 2024

City Savings Bank (CitySavings), the thrift subsidiary of the Aboitiz-led Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank), provides learning assistance by donating 30 bicycle units to the Indigenous Peoples of Balay Paglaum in Panabo City, Davao del Norte, and learning kits to various schools in Leyte. The projects are part of the Bank’s commitment to the MATATAG Agenda of the Department of Education (DepEd) in pursuit of quality, inclusive, and accessible education for all Filipino learners.

Balay Paglaum serves as a home for the young indigenous people of Roxas Elementary School and Sindaton National High School Annex. The facility’s goal is to reduce and ultimately eliminate the dropout rate among Indigenous Peoples (IP) learners by bringing them closer to schools. The donated bicycle units alleviate the financial strain associated with transportation and other expenses, making it easier for the students to travel the remaining distance from Balay Paglaum to their respective schools.

Rosabell Libuan, an incoming Grade 12 student at Sindaton National High School, shared her gratitude to CitySavings.

“This donation is incredibly meaningful to us IP learners. Every day, we walk 15 kilometers from our homes to Balay Paglaum, then another 3 kilometers from there to Sindaton National High School, regardless of the weather. With the gifted bicycles, we now have the means to reach school on time, free from the exhaustion of these lengthy walks. This invaluable support allows us to actively engage in our studies, enhancing our educational experience and maximizing our learning potential.”

Sindaton National High School teacher and IP coordinator Christy Pablico expressed her excitement witnessing the joy among the IP learners of Balay Paglaum upon receiving the donated bicycles.

“CitySavings’ donation of 30 bicycle units brought awe and excitement to our IP learners. They eagerly participated in a demonstration on bike maintenance and proper usage. Witnessing the smiles on their faces and the hope these bikes instilled, our IP learners are motivated to persevere in pursuing their dreams.”

The faculty of Sindaton National High School alongside the caretakers of Balay Paglaum will oversee the maintenance to ensure that the bicycles are in good condition. “Our heartfelt gratitude to CitySavings for supporting us. This will undoubtedly transform the future of many underprivileged IP learners,” she added.

FOR A BETTER LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Learners of Dolho Elementary School in Bato, Leyte receive school bags, school supplies, and footwear from City Savings Bank as it proactively supports the indigenous communities in Eastern Visayas. CitySavings Regional Business Head Adrian Ruiz (leftmost) and Sogod Branch Business Head Kelvin Ruiz (2nd from left) share the joyous moment with the students during the donation turnover.

CitySavings has also taken proactive steps to provide essential support to indigenous communities in Region 8. Some areas in this region face significant learning disparities and economic challenges, as highlighted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). As a result, many students attend school without basic necessities, like proper footwear such as slippers. Just recently, CitySavings spearheaded education-related donations to various schools in Leyte. The Bank gave out school bags, school supplies, and footwear to various schools in Leyte namely Dolho Elementary School, Kagbana Elementary School, and Isabel Central School. Technology-related equipment were also provided to Dolho National High School and Isabel National High School.

DepEd Region 8 Project Development Officer IV Eden Dadap highlighted the importance of synergies between DepEd and stakeholders to build resilient and empowered communities through education. “City Savings Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects exemplify the positive impact that collaborative initiatives have on education and community development. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to CitySavings for the help extended to learners of Region 8,” she mentioned.

CitySavings Senior Vice President and Marketing Head Paula Katerina Joson underscores the importance of initiatives like these, emphasizing the Bank’s role in actively involving and uplifting the communities it serves and fostering collective growth.

“It is our hope that the educational support CitySavings has extended will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our Indigenous People (IP) learners and help them reach their full potential. Our commitment to supporting DepEd’s MATATAG agenda, which seeks to provide quality, inclusive, and accessible education for all Filipino learners, aligns seamlessly with our broader goal of uplifting the lives of the communities we serve.”

Nurturing Sustainable Agriculture through CSR Initiatives

Fields of Impact: Nurturing Sustainable Agriculture through CSR Initiatives

AboitizEyes
January 5, 2024

What are some CSR initiatives for agriculture?

  1. Encouraging sustainable practices in farming
  2. Supporting smallholder farmers
  3. Investing in agriculture-related programs
  4. Promoting conservation initiatives

Overview

  • The Philippines faces agricultural issues, including low production and limited access to modern farming practices, impacting food security and nutrition.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in agriculture play a crucial role in addressing these challenges and promoting sustainability.
  • Aboitiz collaborates on urban agriculture, supports smallholder farmers, invests in agriculture, and fosters digital skills through CSR initiatives.

The Philippines has grappled with pressing agricultural challenges that pose a direct threat to its food security. As an agricultural-centric nation, we confront a spectrum of issues, including diminished production levels and limited access to modern farming practices, worsening malnutrition and hunger concerns. This intricate connection between agriculture and nutrition highlights the significant role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in the agricultural landscape.

The 2022 Global Food Security Index Rating underscored a concerning decline, positioning the country at 67th out of 113 nations. In response, CSR programs anchored in agriculture have emerged as strategic interventions.

This article focuses on CSR initiatives in the Philippines, especially in agriculture, emphasizing their crucial role in building a sustainable food system to address today’s hunger challenges.

Encouraging Sustainable Practices in Farming

Advocating for sustainability in agriculture isn’t only for environmental well-being but also for securing our food resources. Leading companies, exemplified by industry trailblazer Aboitiz in the Philippines, actively participate in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, emphasizing farmer training and education to cultivate sustainable practices.

One noteworthy step that emphasizes Aboitiz’s commitment to eco-friendly agriculture and food security is ‘Sa Maliit na Espasyo, May Pagkain Tayo.’ Spearheaded by the Aboitiz Group, the first techglomerate in the country, in collaboration with The Department of Agriculture (DAR), this initiative represents a concerted effort to enhance sustainable urban agriculture. The program focuses on cultivating small backyard farms in metropolitan areas.

Beyond supplying urban dwellers with essential resources such as gardening tools and seedlings, the initiative contributes to job creation within local communities. The ‘PAGKAIN Para sa Masa‘ program, aligned with its objectives of addressing urban hunger and fostering thriving communities, integrates educational lectures on effective gardening practices.

Supporting Smallholder Farmers

Supporting Smallholder Farmers
Aboitiz strategically engages in a suite of CSR initiatives within the agricultural sector, each meticulously designed to catalyze the prosperity of these vital contributors. Noteworthy among these efforts are:

Green Cold Storage: Revolutionizing Agriculture through Fresh Depot

Fresh Depot, designed for farmers, is committed to sustainability, as seen in eco-friendly cold storage units using advanced green technology with efficient cooling and energy systems.

The strategic deployment of sustainable cold storage units in Manyakan, Benguet, and the Nueva Vizcaya Agricultural Terminal is symbolic of the Aboitiz Group’s resolute dedication to the trajectory of Philippine agriculture. These technology-run facilities serve as instrumental tools in mitigating post-harvest losses, optimizing the agricultural value chain, and advancing the economic landscape for farmers.

Tripartite Partnership for Sustainable Agri-Livelihood

In a synergistic collaboration uniting the Aboitiz Group’s Pilmico with the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), a transformative tripartite partnership has emerged. This initiative operates as a catalyst for empowering Filipino farmers and fostering sustainable agri-livelihood.

Building upon the triumphs of its inaugural year, this collaborative effort persists in propelling farmers toward increased household income. Livelihood packages, including piglets, egg-laying machines, and bakery starter kits, empower recipients to establish and manage profitable enterprises, stressing a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices with a swift return on investment.

Investing in Agriculture-Related Programs

Investing in Agriculture-Related Programs
CSR efforts in farming involve supporting research for sustainable technology, developing rural infrastructure, and initiatives to improve market access for economic growth.

The Aboitiz Group’s ‘Byaheng Digiskarte‘ initiative is set to transform Filipino farming. This visionary project establishes a digital link between farmers and consumers through e-commerce while simultaneously addressing societal needs, such as providing sustenance to underprivileged children.

In a collaborative effort with MayaniPH and Save the Children, the Aboitiz Foundation initiated a donation campaign featuring ‘nutritional boxes’ packed with fresh produce sourced from the Sinacbat Farmers Association. To empower farmers and expand their market presence, the initiative includes digital upskilling programs, leveraging technology to enrich not only the farmers themselves but also their communities.

Promoting Conservation Initiatives

In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Aboitiz Group and the Department of Agriculture have pioneered the transformative ‘Byaheng Digiskarte ni Ani at Kita‘ (BiDA Kita) program.

BiDA Kita serves as an important bridge, connecting agri-businesses with seasoned mentors adept at guiding them through the intricacies of digital tools and strategies. This innovative program not only promotes the growth of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives but also instills a digital mindset among participants, enabling them to expand their market horizons and enhance operational efficiency.

Crucially, this initiative aligns seamlessly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8, emphasizing the promotion of decent work and economic prosperity.

Key Takeaway

Addressing the agricultural challenges in the Philippines requires innovative solutions, and the Aboitiz Group’s CSR initiatives stand at the forefront of this call – steering the nation towards a more food-secure and prosperous future.

City Savings Bank (CitySavings), the thrift arm of Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank), integrates a sustainability-driven approach in its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives by spearheading a number of programs to close out the year. These include Coastal Clean-up drives as well as Mangrove and Tree Planting activities focused on the conservation of coastal and marine life and the fight against climate change.

To reinforce its commitment to environmental protection, CitySavings participated in the International Coastal Clean-Up (ICC) hosted by American conservation group Ocean Conservancy held last year. CitySavings Bankers collected approximately 50 kg of debris from the coastal areas of Lemery, Batangas, and Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur. Lemery, known for its thriving fishing grounds and coastal resorts, underwent a vital cleanup drive to eliminate waste threatening its vibrant ecosystem. Simultaneously, in Pagadian City, the focus was on protecting the Dumanquillas Bay Protected Landscape and Seascape (DBPLS), essential for preserving endemic flagship species like the rabbit fish or Kitong.

The coastal clean-up initiatives brought together employees, volunteers, and local communities, fostering a collaborative spirit to eliminate waste and debris from critical coastal areas. Both programs represent a larger sustainability mindset that is pivotal in preserving the environment’s natural beauty and ensuring its long-term health.

The activities are part of the Bank’s tree-growing initiative, Project SustainabiliTree.

To further advance its contributions to sustainability, CitySavings has been implementing its home-grown tree-planting initiative, Project SustainabiliTree. The Bank rolled out two Project SustainabiliTree programs in Medellin, Cebu, and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte at the end of 2023. Collaborating with the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) and the 4th Marine Brigade, CitySavings facilitated the planting of 1,000 mangrove trees in Medellin, and 500 Narra and Agoo trees in Pasuquin. Project SustainabiliTree stands as a visionary plan aimed at battling deforestation, amplifying carbon sequestration, and nurturing green spaces within communities.

The mangroves planted in Medellin, Cebu, serve to expand nesting grounds for diverse bird species within the municipality, enriching its already thriving ecosystem. Similarly, the tree-growing initiative in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, plays a crucial role in reinstating the protective shield of the watershed in Vintar and Banban, Bangui. This effort effectively minimizes erosion, while concurrently boosting water yield for the neighboring communities.

City Savings Bank’s sustainability initiatives seamlessly align with multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Coastal Clean-Up efforts address SDG 14: Life Below Water, combating marine pollution, and promoting sustainable fisheries. Simultaneously, these initiatives support SDG 15: Life on Land, mitigating land-based pollution and preserving terrestrial ecosystems. Project SustainabiliTree contributes to SDG 13: Climate Action through carbon sequestration and local community resilience, while also aligning with SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by enhancing green spaces in urban areas for more sustainable and vibrant cities.

Seafront Residences' Pawikan Sanctuary Celebrates the Holidays

A Coastal Christmas: A Pawikan Sanctuary at Seafront Residences

AboitizEyes
January 4, 2024

As the holiday season brings warmth and joy, Seafront Residences, a project by Aboitiz Land committed to sustainable development, shares a gift for Mother Nature. Nestled in the heart of Brgy. Calubcub II in San Juan, Seafront Residences is not just a premier seaside community; it stands as a beacon of sustainability and eco-friendliness.

In the spirit of giving back to nature this Christmas, Seafront Residences has been steadfast in its dedication to preserving local biodiversity. At the forefront of this commitment is the Pawikan Sanctuary Project, a collaborative effort launched in 2018 in partnership with the Aboitiz Foundation, the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR), and the University of the Philippines–Diliman Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology.

The project focuses on the conservation and protection of endangered sea turtle species, with special attention given to the Olive Ridley turtles and their nesting habitat along the San Juan, Batangas coastline. To ensure the success of this cause, Seafront Residences initiated the 1st Phase of a comprehensive 5-year management plan. It encompassed crucial elements such as in-depth research, meticulous monitoring, the establishment of hatchling facilities, and educational drives within the local community.

As a beacon of conservation efforts, Seafront Residences implements sustaining initiatives. The Pawikan Night Patrol was conducted on December 16 to monitor and eagerly await the return of pawikans to the shore—an event that symbolizes the continuation of life in the marine ecosystem. Additionally, to foster a sense of community engagement and environmental awareness, residents were encouraged to participate in star-gazing sessions and film showings held throughout the program. These activities aimed to deepen the connection between community and the natural wonders around them, further promoting a collective commitment to environmental preservation.

On December 17, Seafront Residences orchestrated a heartwarming Pawikans Hatchling Releasing event. This ceremony bid farewell to young turtles, sending them off into the vastness of the sea—a gesture towards the ongoing commitment to the protection of these precious species.

Participating in the two-day activity were Aboitiz Land volunteers, Seafront Residences vecinos or residents, Mr. Noel Pasco from the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office, Ms. Ginggay Hontiveros of Aboitiz Foundation Inc., the Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary.

These initiatives are not merely seasonal gestures but a testament to Seafront Residences’ year-round commitment to protecting marine biodiversity in the locality. The recent recognition at the FIABCI Philippines Property and Real Estate Excellence Awards 2022, where Seafront Residences received a Silver Award in the Environmental Category, further underscores the success and impact of their sustainable practices.

This Christmas, Seafront Residences invites everyone to celebrate the spirit of giving by recognizing and supporting the vital conservation efforts that contribute to the well-being of our planet. In fostering a community that lives in harmony with nature, Seafront Residences continues to be a beacon of responsible and sustainable living.

Aboitiz’s Buhisan Watershed Forest Rehabilitation celebrates Four Years of Green Transformation

AboitizEyes
January 3, 2024

For the fourth year in a row, the Aboitiz Group has conducted the rehabilitation of Cebu A-Park, which will enhance and revitalize the Buhisan Watershed Forest Reserve. This initiative forms an integral part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts of the Aboitiz Foundation and various Aboitiz business units in Cebu including Visayan Electric, in collaboration with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP). The project aligns with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Enhanced National Greening Program, underscoring the commitment of the Aboitiz Group to co-create safe, empowered, and sustainable communities.

This year’s project aims to rehabilitate, protect, and conserve 30 hectares of the Buhisan Watershed Forest Reserve. With plans for planting over 150,000 seedlings, establishing a riparian, and creating a butterfly sanctuary, the project demonstrates the Aboitiz Group’s dedication to nature-based carbon emission management through its flagship program, A-Park.

As the Aboitiz Group embarks on its Great Transformation to become the Philippines’ first Techglomerate, sustainability takes center stage. The ongoing partnership between the Aboitiz Group and PBSP under the Cebu A-Park program is vital for the continued rehabilitation of the protected forest, addressing the impending water crisis in Metro Cebu, and stands as a beacon of hope and environmental stewardship. Over the planned five-year program, the initiative not only focuses on environmental conservation but also provides sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.

“For us in the Aboitiz Group, sustainability is an integral part of our Great Transformation journey. We will stay actively focused on developing environmentally and socially impactful initiatives for all our stakeholders, as we continue to advance business and communities,” said Aboitiz Foundation Chief Operating Officer Mardi Mapa-Suplido.

Year 4 of the Cebu A-Park VECO-Buhisan Watershed Forest Rehabilitation Project marks a milestone in this sustainable journey. The project addresses climate change and supports the DENR’s Enhanced National Greening Program. Managing environmental impacts and taking innovative climate action are integral to the Aboitiz Group’s #OneNew Aboitiz Sustainability Synergy, reflecting its commitment to confront critical environmental challenges.

The Buhisan Project, part of A-Park, has played a pivotal role in reforestation efforts, adopting 150 hectares in the Buhisan Watershed. Through partnerships and community engagement, the project ensures a stable water supply for Metro Cebu while providing livelihood opportunities for local organizations.

“Visayan Electric is committed to ensure that this project will continue not just for the environment but also to ensure the steady supply of water to Cebu,” said Engr. Raul Lucero.

Future goals for the Buhisan Project will include planting over 250,000 native trees, achieving an 80% survival rate, establishing a central tree nursery, and creating a two-kilometer riparian. With sustainability at the core of the Great Transformation, the Aboitiz Group remains committed to developing initiatives that have a positive impact on the environment and society.

This sustainable partnership exemplifies the Aboitiz Group’s dedication to contributing to the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals. The Group will continue to collaborate, work towards a sustainable future, and co-create a better world for generations to come.

CSR is not a lone effort but a collective initiative involving numerous stakeholders. Identifying and engaging with your key stakeholders is critical for meaningful influence.

Your stakeholders encompass local communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government agencies, customers, and employees. The Aboitiz Group’s CSR initiatives come to fruition through the collaborative efforts of our diverse stakeholder groups.

The Aboitiz Scholarship Program’s accomplishments in 2022 are a prominent example of this teamwork. This effort had a significant impact on 181 college scholars, 187 technical-vocational (TECVOC) scholars, and 166 senior high school scholars.

Furthermore, 66 scholars graduated from the program, and an additional 13 were hired by the Aboitiz Group, demonstrating the tangible impact of engaging stakeholders in meaningful and sustainable ways.

Integrate CSR Practices in Your Organization’s Operations

CSR should be easily interwoven into the day-to-day activities of your firm. It is not a separate department or a one-time event; rather, it should become an integral part of your business.

Our CSR journey has taken us from simple philanthropy (CSR 1.0) to projects that are seamlessly integrated into core company strategies (CSR 2.0).

In 2019, Aboitiz celebrated a big achievement by receiving CSR 2.0 accreditation for 41% of their CSR programs, including the Purposive College Scholarship, Mahalin Pagkain Natin, Classroom Rewiring, and Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Training.

Develop and Execute Specific CSR Initiatives

Develop and Execute Specific CSR Initiatives
Once clear goals have been set and CSR has been smoothly integrated into operational frameworks, it becomes critical to go from conceptualization to actualization of CSR efforts. The success of these programs is dependent on their ability to address specified societal concerns effectively.

The Aboitiz Group took a diverse approach. Scholarship initiatives, disaster risk reduction training, and the specially designed online crowdsourcing platform KINDer are all part of this. Among these programs are the Aboitiz Scholarship and the Biyaheng Digiskarte Program, both of which are expected to make significant contributions in 2022 by offering extensive support and training to a large number of recipients.

What defines these initiatives is their meticulous planning, which ensures a beneficial impact on the communities they serve. Through this personalized strategy, the Aboitiz Group ensures that its CSR activities are not only well-intentioned but also very effective in bringing about meaningful change.

Establish KPIs to Measure the Impact of Your CSR

Setting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) is a sound strategy for measuring the performance of your CSR operations. KPIs give a thorough framework for evaluating their performance, both statistically and qualitatively.

The Aboitiz Foundation exhibits this method by tracking beneficiary numbers, evaluating impacts on education and enterprise development, and assessing community resilience in emergency scenarios. CSR programs must be evaluated and adjusted on a regular basis based on KPIs to ensure long-term success and ongoing improvement.

The shores of San Juan provide vital economic livelihoods and recreation opportunities community members wish to preserve. However, seasonal coastal threats from marine pollution, especially plastic waste, have heightened concerns around habitat and ecosystem protection in the area.

Locals observe a worrying increase in non-biodegradable debris, particularly plastic packaging and bottles, washing up ashore. With plastic pollution levels rising globally, this surplus seasonal influx jeopardizes community health and treasured spaces for livelihoods and leisure.

Dubbed ‘Coastal Cleanup Amihan,’ Named after the ‘Amihan’ winds, which characterize the strong monsoon season spanning from late October to early April, the initiative specifically addresses the environmental challenges along the coastline of Brgy. Calubcub II.

The initiative convened the locals, government agencies, and private sectors unified in one shared mission— raising public awareness on the impact of plastic products and other disposable items that end up as marine debris that threatens not only aquatic life but also our very own communities.

Joining the effort are the Seafront Residents, Aboitiz Land employees, Municipal Environmental and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) San Juan Batangas and MENRO Sariaya Quezon, Philippine Coast Guard, Barangay Calubcub Officials, and PNP San Juan.

“Non-biodegradable debris, especially plastics, threaten not only the health of our oceans long-term, but the ability of communities like San Juan to enjoy clean and thriving coastal habitats,” said Aboitiz Land CEO David Rafael. “Cleanups like Amihan represent the commitment of the locals and private sectors to preserve our coastal environments and ensure access to stunning seascape views of the province.”

While the annual Coastal Cleanup happens during September, locals identified the Amihan season as needing special attention due to the sheer volume of debris ending up on their shores during this time of the year.

Volunteers collected nearly 750 kg of plastic waste, including bottles, wrappers, caps, sachets and styrofoam. Armed with trash bags and pick-up tools, the teams fanned out along the coastline to promote cleanliness and help restore ecological balance.

The massive volume of marine debris and plastic waste products collected by Coastal Cleanup Amihan calls for the urgent need to make more conscientious consumption choices to avoid harming our environment as part of shared responsibility to one another.

Aboitiz Foundation President and Chief Operating Officer Maribeth Marasigan commended the day’s accomplishments, saying “the clean-up efforts contribute to a cleaner, brighter future for our oceans and shores. When we change today, we can shape the future and create a sustainable legacy. Let us continue the work, and may this mark the continuation of a more eco-conscious journey for all of us.”

While Coastal Cleanup Amihan is a huge success, Aboitiz Land highlights that consistent effort is still critically needed to curb the influx of ocean waste each Amihan season. Continuing its commitment to the people and environment, the company vows to lead preservation and restoration efforts to keep the shores pristine and welcoming for families and community members along the San Juan coast.
